1903年初在Ohio的 Shelby 不銹鋼管廠及賓州的 Greenville 不銹鋼管廠試驗均已完成,其結果是進一步發展Shelby小組的試驗成果大占上風。同年5月在Shelby 不銹鋼管廠設計室開始了基于Shelby試驗的軋管機組的平面布置和設備設計,這臺軋管機將在Greenville建造,它和周期軋管機上做試驗用的軋機結構在許多方面不同,芯棒牢固地固定在后支持器上,管子全長經過頂頭后,被一擋套擋住,使它從芯棒上脫除,這一擋套由長氣缸的活塞進行操作。每軋完一個道次后,上輥可以抬起,軋機前臺的管子被置于V形槽內,在其外端有一空氣缸,其柱塞用以將管子推向頂頭,推入軋輥的軋槽。這就是后來被稱為 Automatic Mill的原始構造。但是還有一個問題沒有解決,這就是還沒有用回送輥以取代風動的擋套,將管子回送至前臺,后來的發展才解決了這一問題,回送輥也是Ohio 的Shelby廠Morse-Wirkstrom 小組的想法。
前面提到過(guo)要設(she)(she)計(ji)一種裝(zhuang)置,當(dang)上輥(gun)升起時(shi)(shi)工(gong)件(jian)可(ke)以(yi)通(tong)過(guo)軋(ya)(ya)制(zhi)線回(hui)(hui)(hui)送(song)(song)至軋(ya)(ya)機(ji)前臺(tai)。回(hui)(hui)(hui)送(song)(song)輥(gun)是一對快速(su)回(hui)(hui)(hui)轉的軋(ya)(ya)輥(gun),裝(zhuang)置在工(gong)作(zuo)輥(gun)的后面,它的動(dong)作(zuo)和工(gong)作(zuo)輥(gun)的動(dong)作(zuo)是相協調的,當(dang)工(gong)作(zuo)輥(gun)合起來軋(ya)(ya)管(guan)(guan)時(shi)(shi),回(hui)(hui)(hui)送(song)(song)輥(gun)就脫開不工(gong)作(zuo),當(dang)上輥(gun)抬起時(shi)(shi)回(hui)(hui)(hui)送(song)(song)輥(gun)將管(guan)(guan)子抱住,將它迅速(su)送(song)(song)回(hui)(hui)(hui)前臺(tai),具有(you)上述特性的新(xin)設(she)(she)計(ji)的軋(ya)(ya)管(guan)(guan)機(ji)于1903年11月(yue)在Greenville 首先進(jin)行試生產(chan),使以(yi)下工(gong)藝成(cheng)為(wei)可(ke)能(neng),即:管(guan)(guan)坯經(jing)過(guo)一次加熱(re)穿軋(ya)(ya)成(cheng)穿孔坯,然(ran)后以(yi)大壓下量軋(ya)(ya)制(zhi)成(cheng)管(guan)(guan)。這一新(xin)發展(zhan)很快就與均(jun)正(zheng)機(ji)配套,管(guan)(guan)子在軋(ya)(ya)制(zhi)后經(jing)過(guo)均(jun)正(zheng),于是自動(dong)軋(ya)(ya)管(guan)(guan)機(ji)加上均(jun)正(zheng),隨后的熱(re)定(ding)徑使得生產(chan)可(ke)供銷售(shou)的熱(re)軋(ya)(ya)成(cheng)品管(guan)(guan)成(cheng)為(wei)可(ke)能(neng),這一夢想完全實現是在1905年。
關(guan)于(yu)回(hui)送(song)(song)(song)輥(gun)(gun)(gun),美國說是Morse-Wirkstrom 小(xiao)組的(de)(de)主(zhu)意。德(de)國的(de)(de)資料稱:1898年Reinhard 曼(man)內斯曼(man)的(de)(de)早年同事Otto Heer向(xiang)Poensgn建議,當兩(liang)重(zhong)式軋機軋制完第一(yi)道后抬(tai)起上輥(gun)(gun)(gun),用回(hui)送(song)(song)(song)輥(gun)(gun)(gun)將空心(xin)坯(pi)從孔型中送(song)(song)(song)回(hui),這(zhe)樣就(jiu)避免了空心(xin)坯(pi)在(zai)傳送(song)(song)(song)過程中浪費時間。Poensgn采納了他的(de)(de)建議,同年Poensgn在(zai)美國又(you)遇到(dao)Stiefel,言下之意似乎回(hui)送(song)(song)(song)輥(gun)(gun)(gun)的(de)(de)主(zhu)意源自德(de)國。自動(dong)(dong)軋管(guan)(guan)(guan)機的(de)(de)誕生地 Greenville 鋼管(guan)(guan)(guan)廠(chang)系屬U.S.Steel,由(you)于(yu)試驗的(de)(de)成(cheng)功,1903年11月在(zai)Greenville安裝了第一(yi)臺自動(dong)(dong)軋管(guan)(guan)(guan)機,沒(mei)有回(hui)送(song)(song)(song)輥(gun)(gun)(gun),談(tan)不(bu)上自動(dong)(dong)軋管(guan)(guan)(guan)機。美國發(fa)明的(de)(de)自動(dong)(dong)軋管(guan)(guan)(guan)工藝又(you)因(yin)為回(hui)送(song)(song)(song)輥(gun)(gun)(gun)問(wen)題和(he)德(de)國有了聯(lian)系,當然這(zhe)已(yi)是發(fa)明周期軋管(guan)(guan)(guan)機11年后的(de)(de)事情了,但已(yi)成(cheng)為無(wu)縫(feng)不(bu)銹鋼管(guan)(guan)(guan)工藝技(ji)術(shu)發(fa)展史上的(de)(de)一(yi)個歷史遺留問(wen)題。
